About the role:

This position involves working with and being part of a cross-skilled Java, Web, Android and iOS development team and will have regular contact with teams looking after other aspects of FanDuel products & tools.

Our Architects are part of a community of our most senior engineers focusing on the organizations most complex, ambitious problems. You will take ownership for technical architecture and operational excellence and lead some of the most important bodies of technical work in the organisation. You will be a core contributor to the organizations “north star” technical strategy, working with other engineering leaders to drive decisions around programming languages, architecture, products, tools, approaches and processes.

Free of line management responsibilities you will provide mentorship and guidance to other engineers, acting as a role model and supporting career progression. Everyone on our team has a big part to play.

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities:
• Lead collaborative architecture initiatives - Partner with diverse engineering teams to align on shared technical strategies that leverage everyone's unique perspectives and expertise
• Champion operational excellence through inclusive practices - Take a hands-on approach to solving complex challenges while fostering an environment where all team members can contribute their problem-solving skills
• Balance technical leadership with mentorship - Maintain coding proficiency while empowering engineers at all career stages to grow, learn, and contribute meaningfully to architectural decisions
• Advocate for sustainable code quality standards - Promote high-quality practices that are achievable and support team success, recognizing that diverse approaches can lead to excellent outcomes
• Guide strategic decision-making collaboratively - Work alongside teams to navigate technical trade-offs, ensuring all voices are heard when balancing immediate business needs with long-term technology goals
• Foster engineering excellence across all dimensions - Champion best practices in operational excellence, security, and quality while creating inclusive standards that work for diverse team structures
• Cultivate talent and drive continuous improvement - Mentor engineers from all backgrounds, supporting their professional growth and helping them leverage their unique strengths to advance technical knowledge and practices.


Skills, Capabilities & Experience Required:
• 8+ years of Java expertise with Java 11+ and/or JavaEE - We welcome candidates from diverse educational and professional backgrounds who have built this experience through various pathways
• Front-end technology experience (JavaScript, React, NodeJS, mobile) - We value different learning journeys and are open to candidates who've gained this knowledge through formal education, bootcamps, self-study, or professional experience
• Proven ability to design resilient systems - Experience building scalable, fault-tolerant, and highly available systems, regardless of the industry or context where this expertise was developed
• Leadership experience with diverse teams - Track record of influencing technical decisions across engineering teams of 25+ people, with appreciation for different communication styles and perspectives
• Strong foundation in computer science fundamentals - Understanding of complex data structures and algorithms, gained through any combination of formal education, practical experience, or self-directed learning
• Mastery of design patterns and architecture - Expert-level knowledge that can be applied and explained to team members with varying experience levels and learning preferences
• Strategic thinking and pragmatic decision-making - Demonstrated ability to balance competing priorities while considering input from diverse stakeholders and team members
• Multilingual programming experience - Proficiency in modern languages like Java, Python, or functional/OO languages, with openness to learning from colleagues with different technical backgrounds
• Change leadership through influence - Success driving operational excellence by building consensus and inspiring teams, respecting different working styles and perspectives
• Innovation mindset and continuous learning - Enthusiasm for emerging technologies, especially AI, with commitment to staying current and helping others navigate technological change
• Modern development tools proficiency - Hands-on experience with cutting-edge tools including GenAI IDEs (Cursor, Windsurf, GitHub Copilot), with willingness to share knowledge and learn from others' experiences.
