Overview

The Site Reliability Engineering Lead (SRE Lead) is responsible for improving the reliability, availability, and operational maturity of Dabble’s production systems.

This is a foundational role that will establish and evolve SRE practices at Dabble, including reliability standards, incident management, observability, and operational processes.

Working closely with Cloud Engineering, Software Engineering, and Product teams, the SRE Lead will focus on improving system resilience, reducing operational overhead, and ensuring services are reliable, observable, and scalable in production.

The role balances hands-on technical contribution with leadership responsibilities, including shaping practices, supporting engineers, and building SRE capability over time.

Primary Location

This role is currently open to all locations within Australia, however candidates based in Melbourne or Brisbane may be preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and evolve SRE practices across Dabble, including reliability standards, observability, and incident management

  • Introduce frameworks such as SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets where appropriate

  • Work with engineering teams to improve the reliability, scalability, and operability of systems

  • Participate in design and architecture discussions, providing input on resilience, performance, and operational considerations

  • Establish and improve incident management processes, including on-call practices and escalation paths

  • Lead or support major incident response when required

  • Improve system visibility through effective monitoring, logging, and alerting, ensuring alerts are meaningful and actionable

  • Identify opportunities to automate operational tasks, reduce toil, and improve CI/CD and release processes

  • Monitor system performance, introduce capacity planning practices, and drive improvements in system resilience

  • Work closely with Cloud, Engineering, and Product teams, providing guidance on best practices and contributing to documentation and runbooks

Leadership and Support

  • Support the growth of SRE capability, including hiring and mentoring engineers over time

  • Provide technical leadership and set expectations for engineering quality and operational practices

  • Remain hands-on in technical delivery, including contributing to tooling, automation, and incident response

Skills & Qualifications

Required

  • Significant experience (5+ years) in SRE, DevOps, platform, or systems engineering roles

  • Strong experience operating and supporting production systems

  • Demonstrated experience implementing SLOs, SLIs, and error budgets

  • Experience with AWS and cloud-native architectures

  • Proficiency in one or more programming/scripting languages

  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, networking, and Linux environments

  • Experience with Kubernetes and CI/CD pipelines

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

  • Experience working across teams to improve systems and processes

  • Excellent communication skills

Nice to have

  • Experience with observability tools (e.g. Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry)

  • Experience improving incident management and operational practices

  • Experience operating high-scale, customer-facing systems

  • Experience in regulated or high-availability environments

Are you a Dabbler?

A Dabbler’s attitude is paramount, as the right person will be able to learn quickly and adapt to any skill gaps. A Dabbler is always a team player, with a willingness to share with and learn from others. Being a remote-first workplace, collaborative working styles are crucial to empower and grow each individual member (eg we prefer openness via public channels to problem solve or ideate on Slack).

A Dabbler uses their freedom of autonomy to its absolute potential and enjoys contributing to the Dabble community. We hold respect for our peers very highly – there is no such thing as a bad idea. We encourage you to think differently, be brave and strive to always raise the bar. Dabble was born out of thought sharing and should tackle growth in the same way. Dabble embraces empowerment of all people at any level of seniority and experience to ‘own their work’ and ‘talk their book’ wherever they can.

A fulfilling life extends beyond work, and we encourage our employees to prioritise self-care and well-being. This means taking breaks when needed, setting boundaries, and seeking support when facing challenges. We are committed to creating a safe environment where individuals feel comfortable discussing their wellbeing and accessing resources when necessary.

The advertised salary for this position is $180,000 - $200,000 + Super + Benefits with room to be flexible.
