Role Overview:

We are seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to join our Platform Capabilities team within the UK & Ireland Infrastructure Tribe. This role is strategically vital for evolving our internal next-generation infrastructure, focusing on cloud-native technologies, platform scalability, and automation excellence.

As a Senior Platform Engineer, you will play a key role in designing, developing, and optimising infrastructure automation, contributing directly to the scalability, reliability, and security of our systems. You’ll also be expected to bring a leadership mindset—guiding team members, mentoring junior engineers, and helping to shape the future of our platform strategy.

This is a hands-on engineering role that offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact, influence the company’s technology direction, and contribute to high-profile initiatives, ensuring the continuous improvement of platform capabilities.

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities:

• Platform Design & Development:
  • Design, develop, and support cloud-native infrastructure and Kubernetes-based automation using Golang and related technologies.
  • Lead the creation and optimisation of CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins (Groovy) and Terraform, enabling smooth deployments and operational consistency.
  • Architect scalable and resilient platforms on AWS, leveraging CDK for infrastructure as code.
• Infrastructure Automation & Scalability:
  • Drive automation strategies that reduce manual processes and promote self-service across engineering teams.
  • Lead initiatives for improving observability using tools like OpenTelemetry, ensuring proactive monitoring and issue detection.
  • Optimise platform scalability, security, and performance while aligning with cost-efficiency best practices.
• Security & Compliance:
  • Maintain platform security, focusing on firewall automation, DNS management, and load balancing to ensure high availability and reliability.
  • Work closely with security and compliance teams to align with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
• Leadership & Mentoring:
  • Act as a technical lead within the squad, offering guidance, mentorship, and technical oversight.
  • Drive cross-functional collaboration with Product Owners, Architects, and other engineering teams.
  • Support the professional development of junior engineers, especially in areas like CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes, and cloud automation.
• Stakeholder Engagement & Communication:
  • Engage with non-technical stakeholders, clearly communicating technical decisions and strategies.
  • Represent the team in platform roundtables and roadmap discussions, advocating for best practices and future-proof solutions.
• Continuous Improvement & Innovation:
  • Keep abreast of emerging technologies, particularly in cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes ecosystems, and DevOps practices.
  • Lead technical workshops and brainstorming sessions, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous learning.

Skills, Capabilities & Experience Required:

Technical Expertise:

• Strong experience with AWS cloud services and cloud-native infrastructure.
• Advanced knowledge of Kubernetes, Docker, and associated cloud technologies.
• Proficiency in Golang and scripting languages (Python, Bash).
• Expertise in Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and CDK.
• In-depth understanding of CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab) and automation strategies.
• Experience with networking fundamentals, including firewalls, DNS, and load balancing.
• Strong understanding of observability tools (e.g., OpenTelemetry, Prometheus).

Soft Skills:

• Strong leadership skills with experience mentoring and guiding engineers.
• Effective communication skills—able to convey technical details to non-technical stakeholders.
• Problem-solving mindset with a proactive approach to complex challenges.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate across teams and drive initiatives forward.
• Ability to thrive in fast-paced, agile environments.

Preferred Experience:

• Proven experience working in cloud-native environments at scale.
• Exposure to high-load, high-performance systems and large-scale microservices architectures.
• Experience with observability and monitoring frameworks (OpenTelemetry, Grafana, Prometheus).
• Experience mentoring junior engineers and leading cross-functional initiatives.
