About Flutter Functions

The Flutter Functions division is a key component of Flutter Entertainment, responsible for providing essential support and services across the organization. The division encompasses various corporate functions, including finance, legal, human resources, technology, and more, ensuring seamless operations and strategic alignment throughout the company.

Role Overview:

Flutter Technology are recruiting a Principal DevOps Engineer to take a leading role in driving the implementation, automation, and operation of our evolving AWS-based Internal Developer Platform. This platform underpins the global services consumed by Flutter's well-known betting brands, enabling faster delivery, improved reliability, and enhanced developer experience across the group.

In this senior capacity, you won’t just engineer; you will shape and execute the technological trajectory for Flutter’s cloud infrastructure at scale. You will collaborate with brands across the group to migrate and modernise their services, deliver cutting-edge platform capabilities, set technical standards, and promote knowledge-sharing and best practices across the engineering community. Your experience will be crucial in the evaluation, selection, and implementation of AWS services, platform tooling (including IaC, CI/CD, Kubernetes, and observability), and the variety of components required to achieve our group strategic objectives.

As a Principal DevOps Engineer, you are expected to step beyond team-level delivery and provide strategic leadership across multiple engineering domains. You will influence long-term direction, drive organization-wide initiatives, and ensure our platforms continue to scale effectively, securely, and sustainably.

As a highly effective principal engineer, you adeptly translate requirements, champion cloud-native practices and platform adoption, and implement risk-reducing methodologies within dynamic, global teams. Drawing on experience from enterprise-scale cloud transformations, your deep technical expertise, passion for cloud, and collaborative approach provide confidence and articulate business value. You will offer technical leadership, mentor others, contribute strategically, and navigate complex interdependencies.

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities:

  • Lead large-scale technical initiatives spanning multiple teams and domains, ensuring alignment with strategic goals.
  • Drive engineering excellence by setting and evolving technical standards, architectural principles, and operational best practices.
  • Partner with leadership to define and influence the long-term DevOps and platform strategy.
  • Evaluate and introduce emerging tools, methodologies, and practices to maintain a modern, competitive platform ecosystem.
  • Provide guidance on organizational scaling challenges (e.g., multi-region, hybrid cloud, compliance, resilience).
  • Build and operate a secure, performant, and cost-effective AWS Cloud Platform.
  • Own and evolve our Kubernetes platform, ensuring its scalability, security, and operational excellence.
  • Spearhead the automation strategy using advanced Infrastructure as Code (IaC) methodologies (Crossplane, Terraform, CDK) and configuration management tooling, driving towards a self-service developer experience.
  • Own and enforce best practices for source code management (Git/GitHub) and artifact repositories (e.g., container registries, Helm repositories).
  • Drive technical design reviews, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and setting high standards for code quality.
  • Participate in an on-call rota to provide operational support and ensure platform reliability.
  • Work on upskilling engineering teams through coaching, mentoring, and structured knowledge-sharing programmes.
  • Assist in hiring, onboarding, and developing high-performing engineering talent.
  • Act as a technical thought leader, representing engineering in cross-functional forums, steering groups, and external communities.
  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement, automation, and measurable outcomes across engineering.
  • Build and maintain strong stakeholder relationships, influencing both technical and non-technical leaders.
  • Lead the troubleshooting of complex incidents, problems, and risks impacting the platform’s services.
  • Drive sustainable incident response and blameless post-mortems.
  • Ensure the platform meets stringent security and compliance requirements, embedding security throughout the design and operational lifecycle.
  • Author, oversee, and ensure the quality of technical documentation, LLDs, runbooks, and architectural diagrams.
  • Advocate for data-driven decision-making, ensuring metrics and KPIs guide operational and strategic initiatives.

Skills, Capabilities & Experience Required:

  • Significant, demonstrable experience building, operating, and scaling cloud platforms within highly available AWS environments.
  • Expertise in Kubernetes (EKS preferred) architecture, operations, and ecosystem tooling.
  • Advanced proficiency with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools (e.g., Crossplane, Terraform, AWS CDK, CloudFormation) at scale.
  • Proven experience implementing and managing GitOps workflows and tooling (e.g., ArgoCD).
  • Strong, practical experience designing and managing complex CI/CD pipelines (e.g., AWS CodePipeline, Argo Workflows, GitHubActions, Jenkins).
  • Strong programming and scripting skills (e.g., Python, Go, Bash) applied to automation, platform development, and tooling.
  • Mastery of Git and collaborative development workflows (GitHub).
  • In-depth understanding of cloud security principles and proven experience delivering systems in security-compliant environments.
  • Experience leading technical initiatives or feature development across multiple platform or cloud teams.
  • Proven leadership, mentoring, and coaching capabilities.
  • Ability to grasp the big picture, navigate ambiguity, and translate strategic goals into technical solutions.
  • Outstanding communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders in cross-functional, global teams.
