About the role

We are looking for a Senior Legal Counsel to join our Legal team in Sydney.

Our Legal team helps Stake move quickly with confidence. We work alongside teams across the business to solve complex problems, enable ambitious product ideas and navigate an evolving regulatory landscape. Rather than acting as a final checkpoint, we're trusted partners from the earliest stages of decision making, helping the business make smart, commercial decisions that create better outcomes for our customers.

As Senior Legal Counsel, you'll play a key role in shaping how Stake grows. You'll advise on new products, commercial initiatives and strategic decisions while ensuring we continue to meet the high standards expected of a regulated financial services business. You'll work across almost every part of the company, balancing legal risk with commercial opportunity and helping teams move with clarity and confidence.

We work hybrid spending 3 days in our beautiful, dog-friendly Sydney office.

What success looks like

  • Become a trusted adviser to leaders across Product, Engineering, Operations, Customer Success, Marketing, Finance and People, helping teams solve complex challenges with practical legal advice.
  • Shape the legal strategy behind new products and features, enabling innovation while ensuring Stake continues to meet its regulatory obligations.
  • Build simple, scalable legal frameworks that allow the business to move faster without compromising quality or customer outcomes.
  • Partner closely with Compliance and Risk to navigate regulatory change, strengthen governance and continuously improve our control environment.
  • Lead complex commercial negotiations and establish contract frameworks that support Stake's long-term growth.
  • Improve how legal operates by introducing smarter processes, automation and repeatable ways of working that create leverage for the team.
  • Develop the capability of the wider business by making legal concepts accessible through clear guidance, practical training and trusted partnerships.
  • Help grow a high-performing legal function by mentoring colleagues, raising the quality bar and contributing to the team's long-term success.

You'll thrive here if…

  • You bring significant post-admission experience from a leading law firm, an in-house legal team, or a combination of both, with strong exposure to financial services.
  • You're commercially minded and enjoy finding practical solutions that help the business move forward while managing legal risk.
  • You have deep knowledge of Australia's financial services regulatory framework, including the Corporations Act, ASIC Act and Privacy Act.
  • You communicate complex legal issues with clarity and influence, adapting your advice for technical and non-technical audiences alike.
  • You're comfortable working across multiple priorities in a fast-moving environment and take ownership through to outcomes.
  • You enjoy building trusted relationships and working alongside cross-functional teams to solve meaningful business problems.

Bonus if you've ever…

  • Worked in a high-growth fintech or regulated technology business.
  • Advised on technology, SaaS or strategic commercial agreements.
  • Supported ASIC, AUSTRAC or other regulatory engagements.
  • Helped build legal operations, automation or knowledge management capabilities.
  • Mentored junior lawyers or contributed to building high-performing legal teams.
