About this role

A pivotal leadership role within Stake, this role leads the team responsible for our trading platform and the journey well beyond it. You'll be at the helm of a high-performing team of engineers, driving the technical and cultural foundations that will define Stake's next generation trading experience.

As an Engineering Technical Lead at Stake, you will lead an engineering squad and contribute to its direction (alongside Head of Engineering/CTO/product leads). You are a role model for more junior engineers by championing best practices and introducing new software methodologies to improve efficiencies in the team. You can smoothly transition between handling technical development and overseeing your team’s task, (including conducting 1:1s), coach and provide professional development as well as facilitate performance management where applicable. In addition, you balance the Stake roadmap with your own experience, creativity and vision to ensure that we’re building the best in market, forward looking product.

Day to day responsibilities include:

  • Lead, coach, and grow a team of engineers: hiring, onboarding, feedback, performance management, and career development.
  • Own outcomes across trading flows (e.g., buy/sell, pricing, charting, portfolio, user experience) with clear prioritisation across competing demands.
  • Drive operational excellence: on-call health, incident response, post-incident follow-through, runbooks, and measurable reliability improvements.
  • Provide EM-level technical leadership: architecture and design reviews, migrations, integration strategy, and pragmatic risk tradeoffs.
  • Manage external dependencies (vendors/partners) with strong coordination, clear SLAs/expectations, and robust failure handling.
  • Partner with Risk/Compliance and Operations to embed controls without slowing delivery—balancing customer experience, risk, and time-to-ship.

A bit about you

  • You are an investor or trader, and have a depth of understanding within the space
  • You've managed engineering teams before, and you understand how your role and responsibilities shift between a team of 4 and a team of 8 engineers.
  • You've ideally worked in a startup environment and know what supporting a customer-facing production system truly entails: the pace, the trade-offs, and the accountability.
  • You have commercial acumen. You care more about the company's outcomes than any single team's outcomes, and you make decisions that reflect it.

At Stake, we’re more interested in your attitude than your resume. If you believe this is a role you want to jump into, please apply and let us know why in your cover letter!
