About the role
The Data Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the data infrastructure that powers analytics, machine learning, AI‑driven products, and operational insights across Sigma Group’s global event portfolio. This role ensures that data is reliable, accessible, secure, and optimised for both real‑time and large‑scale processing-supporting the unique demands of live events and the fast‑moving iGaming ecosystem.
The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise with a passion for data quality, automation, and scalable architecture. They will play a key role in enabling AI adoption across the organisation by ensuring data pipelines, storage systems, and processing frameworks are AI‑ready.
Key Responsibilities
Data Pipeline Development & Maintenance
- Designs, builds, and maintains scalable ETL/ELT pipelines to support analytics, reporting, and machine learning workloads.
- Integrates data from event platforms, CRM systems, mobile apps, exhibitor tools, and third‑party iGaming systems.
- Ensures pipelines are reliable, efficient, and optimised for both batch and real‑time processing.
Data Architecture & Infrastructure
- Develops and maintain data models, schemas, and storage solutions that support business intelligence and AI use cases.
- Works with cloud‑based data platforms to ensure scalability, performance, and cost efficiency.
- Implements best practices for data governance, lineage, cataloguing, and documentation.
AI Tooling & AI‑Ready Data Enablement
- Prepares and structures data for machine learning, predictive analytics, and AI‑powered features.
- Collaborates with data scientists and ML engineers to support model training, deployment, and monitoring.
- Introduces AI‑assisted data engineering tools, such as:
- automated pipeline optimisation
- intelligent anomaly detection
- AI‑driven data quality checks
- Ensures data infrastructure supports AI‑enabled products such as personalised event recommendations, predictive event insights, and automated content generation.
Events & iGaming Data Support
- Builds data flows that support the unique dynamics of live events, including real‑time engagement tracking and high‑volume data ingestion.
- Supports analytics for attendee behaviour, exhibitor performance, session engagement, and iGaming‑specific metrics.
- Ensures data systems can handle traffic spikes during major events and tournaments.
Data Quality, Security & Compliance
- Implements data validation, monitoring, and alerting to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Ensures compliance with data‑privacy regulations and responsible‑gaming requirements where applicable.
- Works with security teams to embed secure‑by‑design principles into data systems.
Collaboration & Cross‑Functional Support
- Partners with product, engineering, marketing, and event operations teams to understand data needs and deliver scalable solutions.
- Supports business stakeholders with data access, tooling, and self‑service analytics capabilities.
- Contributes to a culture of data literacy and evidence‑based decision‑making.
Qualifications
Key Skills & Competencies
- Strong proficiency in Python, SQL, and data engineering frameworks
- Experience with cloud data platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP)
- Knowledge of streaming technologies (e.g., Kafka, Kinesis, Pub/Sub)
- Familiarity with data modelling, warehousing, and distributed systems
- Understanding of AI/ML data requirements and MLOps concepts
- Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non‑technical teams
- Experience with event‑driven architectures or iGaming data is a plus
Preferred Experience
- Educated to degree level in a numerate or technical discipline, Masters preferred.
- 5+ years of technical experience in data engineering, data architecture, or related fields
- 1-2+ years of management or mentorship experience, such as leading projects or guiding junior engineers
- Experience supporting analytics and AI workloads in production environments
- Background working with event data, digital engagement data, or iGaming systems
- Proven track record of building scalable pipelines and cloud‑native data solutions
- Experience introducing AI tooling or supporting AI‑enabled product development
