About the team
The Data Platform Infrastructure team is part of the Data division and is responsible for building, maintaining, and evolving the infrastructure that powers evoke's modern data platform. The team owns and supports critical platform capabilities across AWS, MSK, Kafka Connect, Kubernetes/EKS, GitLab CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, Flink deployments, OpenSearch, observability, cost optimisation, and operational support. We enable engineering teams to deploy and operate data workloads safely, reliably, and efficiently across environments.
Our work directly supports real-time data processing, platform resilience, scalable data infrastructure, and strategic data initiatives such as Event Broker. The team works closely with Data Engineering, Framework, Platform, and product-aligned teams to deliver reusable infrastructure patterns, reliable deployment capabilities, and operational excellence. As a hands-on engineering team with strong ownership of production reliability, we value collaboration across teams, proactive problem-solving, knowledge sharing, and high-quality documentation.
What you will be doing
The Senior Cloud Engineer is part of the Data Platform Infrastructure team and is responsible for designing, building, and operating the cloud infrastructure and deployment capabilities that power evoke’s Smart Data Platform (SDP). The role owns and supports critical platform capabilities across AWS, Kubernetes/EKS, Terraform/Terragrunt, GitLab CI/CD, Python automation, Apache Flink, OpenSearch, observability, monitoring, alerting, cost optimisation, and operational support. The engineer will help ensure that real-time data processing workloads are deployed reliably, monitored effectively, and operated safely across environments.
The role directly supports platform resilience, scalable data infrastructure, real-time data processing, and strategic data initiatives such as Event Broker. Working closely with Data Engineering, Framework, Platform, and product-aligned teams, the engineer will contribute to reusable infrastructure patterns, reliable deployment capabilities, and operational excellence. The role includes ownership of Kubernetes and CI/CD platforms, evolution of Flink deployment patterns across AWS Managed Flink and EKS, contribution to OpenSearch infrastructure and security, and continuous improvement of observability, reliability, and cost efficiency across the platform. As a senior technical contributor, the engineer will provide hands-on guidance to other teams, lead technical discussions where required, support the design of streaming-based solutions, and promote knowledge sharing and documentation. The role also embraces modern AI-assisted engineering practices, leveraging tools such as Codex, Copilot, Claude, or equivalent technologies to improve productivity, delivery quality, automation, and engineering workflows.
Who we are looking for
• Strong hands-on experience with AWS infrastructure in a production environment.
• Advanced experience with Kubernetes and Amazon EKS.
• Strong experience with Terraform/Terragrunt and infrastructure-as-code best practices.
• Strong experience designing, maintaining, and improving CI/CD pipelines, ideally using GitLab CI/CD.
• Strong scripting or software engineering experience with Python.
• Experience with Apache Flink, Flink Operator, AWS Managed Flink, or equivalent streaming/data-processing technologies.
• Experience supporting real-time or streaming-based data platforms.
• Experience with Kubernetes autoscaling, Karpenter, node pools, scheduling, tolerations, disruption budgets, and workload optimisation.
• Experience with monitoring, alerting, observability, and production troubleshooting.
• Experience operating production systems and participating in on-call support.
• Ability to design reliable, reusable, and maintainable platform engineering patterns.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to turn complex technical problems into scalable solutions.
• Ability to work across teams, explain technical decisions clearly, and support other engineers.
Desirable
• Experience with OpenSearch infrastructure, security, authentication, access control, index configuration, and production operations.
• Experience with Kafka, Kafka Connect, or broader event-driven architecture.
• Experience deploying GitLab runners on Kubernetes/EKS.
• Experience with cloud cost optimisation, particularly around autoscaling and workload efficiency.
• Experience with New Relic or similar observability platforms.
• Experience with data platform infrastructure in a regulated or high-availability environment.
• Experience leading workshops, mentoring engineers, or establishing cross-team technical patterns.
• Practical experience using AI-assisted engineering tools such as Codex, Copilot, Claude, or equivalent.
